How does your media product represent certain social groups?

Character 1: Asad

Asad is the antagonist of our film, he falls into the social group of a middle aged man. When he first appears into the film people will not realise that he is an antagonist as he is made to look like the victim. Then after he is revealed to be the antagonist after they find a young girl in the boot of the car.

Asad's similarity to other characters. Asad is similar to the protagonist turned antagonist Jack Torrance from The Shining. Both characters are similar of height and age. However they had different ethnicity's as we used a Asian man in our film so that we did not have to follow the typical stereotype of a white antagonist.

Character 2: Sarah

Sarah is our victim of the film and also she is only in the film for a short amount of time as she is locked in the boot throughout the scene. Sarah falls into the social group of a young teenager girl. It is very easy to tell that she is the due to mis-en-scene costume. She follows a typical stereotype of an innocent teenager girl.

She is of a similar character to Amanda Talley from hostage even though they are of different age. However the actor we used was Asian as our story was about the antagonist kidnapping a teenager which reminds him of his daughter, so as our antagonist is Asian we had an Asian female victim.

Similar films:

Scream (1996) - Both films have a plot twist where the antagonist gets revealed to be the original protagonist.

Hostage (2005) - This film uses the same idea of kidnappers, but they hold the victims hostage in their own house.

How does your media product represent social media groups:

We wanted our film to be recognised as a thriller/ horror film. To successfully achieve this we needed to follow the typical stereotypes which are used in a thriller film. We used props to show straight away who the victim was and who the antagonist was and it was very easy to identify that our film was a thriller film. Our film shows the victim fitting in the social group of young teenage girl who is vulnerable and weak.

The middle aged man is represented as evil, which is a typical antagonist role. The typical antagonist role is a male role who is big and dominant.
